Course Description:

Dynamic Sketching 1 is a class designed to develop a foundation in basic drawing skills. Students will learn how to break down objects to their most simplistic forms. Using pen and toned paper, students will learn to build confidence in your line work.

  • Week 1: Warm ups exercises for drawing and materials introduction.
  • Week 2: Study of Organic forms, contour lines and texture description.
  • Week 3: Analysis of Geometric forms, basic perspective and shadows studies.
  • Week 4: Careful study of how the previous five forms create an interrelationship to describe the subject matter with more line work
  • Week 5: Use of markers and Additional materials to create better sense of depth, volume and textures.
  • Week 6: Arboretum trip, drawing organic forms from observation at location.
  • Week 7: Redesign. Introduction of how to interpret different references to improve your original concepts.
  • Week 8: Recap, and beyond?

  • Week 1: Introduction to class, warmup exercises including line control, line weight and efficiency, and materials  review.
  • Week 2: Basic perspective exercises, perspective and ellipse tips and tricks.
  • Week 3: Developing convincing volumes using organic forms and contour lines. Texture studies and applying texture to the basic forms
  • Week 4: Understanding basic lighting, applying textures, creating a focal point and having fun with arrows.
  • Week 5: Leaning to combine and manipulate the 5 forms to create believable volumes. dissecting forms to create depth, and basic form analysis.
  • Week 6: Arboretum/botanical garden field trip. Learning to break down organic forms into simple thumbnails, and understanding how to take a drawing to a finish. Local parks, gardens, and plant nurseries are also acceptable.
  • Week 7: Redesign project. Taking what we learn from observation and transforming them into original concepts that can be used for the entertainment industry.
  • Week 8: Redesign part 2, discussing the importance of layout, recap, and a sneak peek at Dynamic 2.
