Course Description:

This class is an extension of the Environment Design 1 class. The goal here is to go more into the intricacies of environment painting and design specifically for the video game and feature film genres. A longer term project will include designs tasks as exteriors, interiors, establishing shots and design call outs.

Environment Design 2


  • Week 1: Basic composition, value and color theory for environment.
  • Week 2: Students pick their own project and story that will cover for 8 weeks.
  • Week 3: Black and White thumbnail sketches for exterior using different lighting and camera angle based on reference.
  • Week 4: Continuation with previous thumbnails, do various different shots with colors and different lighting situation ( dawn, afternoon, night, golden hour.)
  • Week 5: Final image of wide establishing shots.
  • Week 6: Final image of an exterior shot ( medium or close up angle exterior).
  • Week 7: Ideation sketches for interior shot + prop of vehicle design.  Prop should be included in the  Scene of interior layout.
  • Week 8: Final image of interior shot + prop callout.

Feb. 5th, 2017 - Apr. 4th, 2017 + 2 weeks for content review

Gilles has been a Senior Concept Artist at Ubisoft Montreal since 2007. He has spent most of his time working on the Assassin's Creed games since 2008. Gilles also has work published in books such as "Digital Art Masters" (vol.7, 8, 9) and is a co-author of the book "Art Fundamentals" (3D Total).His work has been featured in exhibitions at E3 and has been selected in Kotaku's best concept art for video games 2014 Selection.He is French and currently residing in Canada since 2000.
