Course Description:

Whether for film, video games, or digital feature animation, this class will be guiding students on learning what creates a compelling environment from the ground up. We explore fundamentals such as perspective, drawing , storytelling, painting, creating atmosphere, establishing lighting and how we can combine all these different elements for a full scene. By the end of this class, students will have the process and structure to give them the confidence they need to create more solid environments.

*For classes with less than 6 students feedback may be provided during the live QandA session.



  • Week 1:Introduction to Photoshop, brushes and tools. Here we will do a comprehensive look at the students process in which they paint environments.
  • Week 2:Study on composition, perspective, thumbnailing and value. While adding in atmosphere, students will create a top down map in which they will create environment thumbs from different locations on their map.
  • Week 3:Form language study - We will talk about form language and how it elicits different feelings and moods in environments (call outs, developing overall look and feel of an environment).
  • Week 4:Begin to discuss value and texture. We will also discuss taking a thumbnail to a rendered finish.
  • Week 5:Color and Light — We will begin discussing color and how to apply it to your environment (time of day, season, mood).
  • Week 6:Color / Lighting with an environment (conveying a mood). Discussing different lighting scenarios and how they can affect your designs.
  • Week 7:Advanced Texturing/Brushwork — Learning about soft edges, hard edges, smooth rough surfaces and how it applies to stylizing environments.
  • Week 8:Putting it all together using all the techniques learned in this class.

Hueala Teodor was born and raised in Romania, he studied graphics at the Fine Arts University in Romania .His career started in the mobile game industry in 2012 doing freelance untill 2013 when he got his first in-house job at a mobile game company. During this time perioad he worked on various projects including board games, comics and doing gallery presentation shows.In 2016 he switched from mobile games towards the AAA game industry joining Ubisoft.In 2017 Teodor got back to freelance and he has artwork published in 2d Artist Magazine and Faith Series from Burning Games.
