Course Description:

Animal drawing emphasizes on developing an understanding of the anatomy of wildlife and domestic animals. Students will learn to construct quadruped skeletons as well as rendering fur and reptilian skin. Furthermore, there is an exploration on form and perspective with an analysis on gestures and expression. Learning to draw animals is vital step in creating populated landscapes as well as building a foundation that strengthens believability when developing creature designs.

  • Week 1: Basics of Animal Structure - Introduction to structure, how animals are built, understanding form, gesturals, shape and boney landmarks in Equine and Bovine
  • Week 2: Unguligrade Skeleton (Equine and Bovine) -  introduction to the Skeleton and the movement and limitations of the joints, Balance and Proportions.
  • Week 3: Unguligrade Construction Shapes and Muscles (Equine and Bovine) - Form and Form Direction, filling out structure and surface form with muscle and deep tissue masses.
  • Week 4: Digitigrade Skeleton (Canine and Feline)- Breaking down the forms into simple shapes.
  • Week 5: Digitigrade Construction Shapes and Muscles (Feline and Canine) - Understanding the construction of basic shapes, and muscle structures within them.
  • Week 6: Boney Fish, Sharks and Reptiles - Construction shapes, skeleton and muscle overviews.
  • Week 7: Birds - Construction shapes, skeleton and muscle overview. Wing feather groups, beaks and folding and unfolding of the wings.
  • Week 8: Prehistoric Life and Rendering - Bird hipped, Lizard hipped, construction shapes, muscle and skeleton overview. Rending techniques for coloring and finalizing animal drawings.
