Build a stronger portfolio

NOTE: Course outline for each instructor may be different; for specific outline information, please select the instructor and click on "Request Syllabus" below. | This mentorship is designed to be tailored to each student's goals and challenges as character designers, and to help each student build a stronger, more professional character design portfolio. Through one-on-one mentoring over a series of group sessions and lectures, the instructor will work with students to refine their existing work, design new characters, explore style and shape language, and ultimately create a cohesive body of work for their portfolios and future projects. In preparation for the first live session, students will submit their most up-to-date portfolios during the orientation period/Week 0 of the course. *Please note: an application is required for this course.

Assignment:   Ongoing work each week (Expect to spend 8-10 hrs/wk)

Prerequisites:   *NOTE: application required Students should have a good sketching and drawing foundation, and basic knowledge in color techniques. Course prerequisites: Character Design for Animation, Character Design for Production.

Discussion about the path to becoming a character designer | Personal Style presentation | Analyzing artistic paths | Designing a path of action: what does the workload ahead look like? Stylistic choices and why you have chosen them - i.e. what it means to have a "style." | Conceptualizing a story | Why story is most important
Defining shape language across the board. Find the style of character with strong silhouette and shape; learn about brainstorming
Exploring techniques that will aid personal artistic development. Bring your sketch to life: Understand the basic principle for character designer.
Keeping your character identifiable through the different arcs of your story.
Exploring techniques that will aid personal artistic development. Bring your sketch to life: exaggerate & high contrast for your character.
Achieving cohesiveness through your artwork, keeping consistency between styles. Talk about a style guide and create characters for your character line up!

How to effectively present characters created in the course as part of one cohesive portfolio. The importance of knowing your audience and how to continue to develop your portfolio after this course.

David was born in Jersey City and raised in Manalapan, New Jersey. Growing up infatuated with the arts and music, he spent his childhood splitting his time between drawing what he loved and playing his piano and trumpet. He graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in 2010 with a BFA in Illustration. In January 2015, he moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in the animation industry, began as a Prop Designer for Disney Television Animation, and hasn't looked back since. He is currently a lead character designer at Netflix, on an unannounced project. His other clients have included Disney Television Animation, Dreamworks TV, WB, Titmouse, Nickelodeon, and Bento Box, among others. He currently lives in Burbank with his boyfriend and their dog, Banjo.
