Michelangelo Buonarroti

Michelangelo Buonarroti

Sculptor, Painter, Architect, Genius

Often called Il Divino (“the divine one”), Michelangelo created some of the most famous works of art in history. As a sculptor, painter, architect, and poet, he embodies the idea of the Renaissance Man. Known primarily for his sculptural works, such as the Pietà and David, he also painted two of the most influential frescoes in Western Art--both of which are in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. As a commentary on how much Michelangelo enjoyed working on the project, he added a self portrait to the Last Judgment fresco: as the flayed skin of Saint Bartholomew.
